| SPR | Room left | Happy to commit | Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 (low) | little | top pair, overpairs | commit strong made hands without agonising |
| 4 to 6 (medium) | some | strong pairs, sets, big draws | pot control one pair, stack off sets and better |
| over 6 (high) | lots | sets, nutted hands, strong draws | keep pots small with one pair, need the nuts to play a big pot |
Common questions
- What is stack-to-pot ratio (SPR) in poker?
- SPR is the effective stack divided by the pot at the start of a postflop street. It uses the smaller of the two remaining stacks, since that is the most either player can win or lose in that pot.
- How do you calculate SPR?
- SPR = effective stack / pot, where the effective stack is the smaller remaining stack. If the pot is 6bb going to the flop and the shorter stack behind is 30bb, the SPR is 30 divided by 6, which is 5.
- What is a good SPR and how do the bands change commitment?
- A low SPR of 1 to 3 favours strong made hands like top pair, which can commit without agonising. A medium SPR of 4 to 6 rewards pot control with one pair and stacking off with sets or better. A high SPR above 6 punishes one pair and favours hands that can make the nuts, since deep stacks behind mean only strong holdings want to play a big pot.
- Why do 3-bet pots have such a low SPR?
- Every preflop raise and call inflates the pot before the flop is even dealt, which lowers the SPR for the same stack depth. A 3-bet or 4-bet pot builds a much bigger preflop pot than a single raised pot, so the flop SPR is crushed and hands like one pair become an easy stack-off instead of a tricky decision.
SPR is mostly decided before the flop. See how a 3-bet pot crushes the SPR and changes the plan.
