Equity

Equity is the percentage of the pot a hand would win if the cards were run to showdown right now, counting a split pot as half a win. It is calculated as your win percentage plus half your tie percentage.

equity = win% + tie% / 2

Equity is the number every other calculation on this site builds on. It answers one question: if no more betting happened and the hand ran out right now, how often would you win the pot?

A pair of aces against a random hand runs around 85% equity. A flush draw against one opponent runs around 35%, since roughly one river in three completes it. These are showdown numbers only, not a promise of what you collect once betting and folding get involved.

Ties count as half a win, because a split pot only returns half the money:

equity = win% + tie% / 2

Worked example. Out of 100 equally likely run-outs, your hand wins 60, loses 32, and splits the pot 8 times:

equity = 60% + 8% / 2 = 64%

Your fair share of this pot, on these cards, is 64%.

Every calculator on this site starts from equity. Pot odds compares it to a price, expected value multiplies it by money, and equity realisation tracks how much of it a hand actually banks once the betting starts.
